How reading is organised at TJS

The scheme we use seems complicated at first, but it won't take long to get used to it.
At the start of each term, all pupils take an online reading comprehension assessment- STAR test. The questions are adjusted to each pupils individual need and get easier if they get questions incorrect and harder if they answer correctly. This assesement produces an individual report which is shared with parents. It provides information on strategies for improving reading, a reading age and a recommended reading zone.
This reading zone guides the pupils to choose suitable books at their reading level and books that will help develop their reading skills further. We have labelled all of the books in the school which are part of the reading scheme with coloured labels on the spines.
Once a book from the scheme has been read, an online quiz is available to check the pupils understanding about what they have read. All of this information is stored and analysed by the staff.
Parents and carers have the opportunity to receive emails about their child's progress on these quizes via email. It requires a simple registration, but means that you can keep informed about the books that are being read, the score for quizes and the frequency of reading. A letter with a username and password is sent home when the child joins the school, but can be requested at any point from the school office.
All of the quizes that are successfully taken contribute to house points and we celebrate the results in assembly on a Friday. The names of the three children who have read the most words each week are also recognised in this assembly.
